Cue Phantom Planet.

By Elizabeth

First thing’s first: I’m really amped about this weekend because I’m finally visiting David in Los Angeles for his birthday (which, as the bold typeface suggests, is also one of my challenges)! I’ve been to California once before, but it was three years ago and only for about five hours. All I saw / experienced were the San Diego airport, an In-and-Out Burger and a Wal-Mart before crossing the border into beautiful *sarcasm* Tijuana.

This time around, I’m going to be there for four days (well, two full days; I’m traveling part of the time the other two), and in the flurry of e-mails we’ve been sending back in forth this week, David has assured me that we’ll be experiencing a wide and varied cross-section of what the city has to offer. I can’t think of someone who I’d trust more to be the ideal tour guide. Items on the current itinerary include:

  • David’s birthday dinner tomorrow night (July 12) at The Edison: This is a swanky underground (like, literally under the earth, not unknown) restaurant / bar / music venue that’s housed in Los Angeles’ first private power plant. Points of interest: 1) They have a dress code (I don’t think I’ve ever been to a  restaurant that had one besides “No shirt, no shoes, no service”) and 2) They have a drink on the menu with Absinthe in it — apparently it’s legal in the U.S. now. WTF?!
  • Amoeba Music: Touted as “The World’s Greatest Record Store” in a 1998 Rolling Stone article. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping to find a copy of either Why’s The Hollows EP or Alopecia on vinyl. I’m also making a mental note to grab as many free copies of Vice as I can stuff into my bag.
  • American Apparel: Yeah. Cliche. I don’t care. I need some new T-shirts and skirts. And this (not kidding).
  • Photobooths!: One of my other challenges on the master list is to take my picture in at least five photobooths across the country; with this site, which can help you locate a photobooth anywhere in the United States, I might be able to take five in L.A. alone.
